Agriculture has been the backbone of human civilization, providing food, fiber, and fuel for millennia. However, the growing global population, climate change, and resource depletion have placed unprecedented pressure on agricultural systems. To address these challenges, innovative technologies are being developed to enhance productivity, sustainability, and resilience. Among these, nanotechnology has emerged as a transformative force, offering novel solutions to age-old problems.
By manipulating matter at the nanoscale (1–100 nanometers), nanotechnology enables the creation of materials and devices with unique properties and functionalities. In agriculture, nanotechnology is being applied in the form of nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, and nanosensors, which promise to revolutionize farming practices. This chapter explores the principles, applications, benefits, and challenges of nanotechnology in agriculture, with a focus on its relevance for UPSC aspirants.
